smiling next to oprah and the queen

i wanna be a billionaire, so frickin' bad, but i am pretty sure this collection is not going to be my ticket to the fast train going in that direction. nonetheless, i began collecting squished pennies many years ago.

i started the collection as a way to gather souvenirs from my travels, which were easy to transport, simple to store, didn't take up a lot of space, and were very inexpensive, but which also gave a good indication of where i'd been or where they'd come from.

i soon discovered that not very many of my vacation spots value the fine qualities of the good ol' pressed penny. that's where my fantastic friends stepped in. not only did matt and emmy discover this amazing squished penny storage book, in a shop in estes park, colorado, but they have also donated to my collection over the years. and last night i finally filled the final slot in my first book. matt just returned from alaska, and my only souvenir request was a squished penny. i really didn't think he would find a place to make one, but as usual, matt came through for me. that anchorage, alaska penny was the final piece of this collection...well, until i get a new book.

here are my pennies and below is a list of the locations from whence they came, and i have tried to remember if the penny is actually from a place i've been to, or whether it was donated. i might be wrong on some of them, but here's the list according to danelle:

so, now i need to get a new book and this time i am going to keep better track of when and from whom i get them. i also need to keep better track of the pennies, in general, because i am certain i have misplaced a few i made for myself. i still have tons of fun collecting them. my heart does a little happy flip whenever i see a machine, sadly, some of the machines don't work, like the one at the midvale mining company restaurant, or the stupid one at the dinosaur museum in vernal, utah...it looked like a squished penny machine, but it spit out a stupid token instead. let the hunt continue!

so tell me, what types of things do YOU collect?

The rainforest Cafe, I gave to you. I got it for ya in January of this year when I took the boys to the supercross races in Phoenix.

Alaska is land of the midnight SUN, although I am sure there is some 5K or 10K celebrating the longest day. I did the Multnoma Falls one last year, so you must have done the Columbia Gorge one. Sorry I did two Tillamook Cheeses. They should actually be ice cream, because that is the only reason I stop there.

I collect press pennies also, kind of. I get them when I see them, and if I'm someplace like Disneyland where they have lots of different penny presses all over the place, I'll get any that I think are fun. Last November we were in Yosemite, and I wasn't setting up the machine correctly (it was a manual one where you turn the arrow, not the nice automatic ones where you just push the button) anyways I ended up with some of the lame Yosemite designs as I was trying to get a cool design. We are going there the beginning of next week with
Brien's parents, and I doubt their images will be changed out. I love that Disneyland changes the designs available.

You probably didn't think you'd get such a long comment about pressed pennies (I have a Disneyland book that's almost full, and a book from Yosemite that I'm also working on filling up.)

I used to collect erasers growing up...the kind that are molded into all different kinds of character etc. I still have the box with all of them in it!...I now collect butterflies...our family does, they are a sign of comfort for us after our baby passed away.

I love your squishy penny collection! I have a squishy penny collection too...but I only have 3 penneis in mine. Its hard to find those machines. I look for them everywhere but I haven't seen many. The one that started my collection was from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Virginia..it was so cool. Now I'm going to have to get a book and see if I can fill it up before I die!
